Six Breaths of wind make a man

"... I filled my lungs with the dense air of a freedom limited only by the fear to lose it again... "
LUIS SEPULVEDA

March 2003

Last night I went to the theatre. I have seen Opus-Cactus. A fascinating and really beautiful show. Athletic ballet. Proportionate muscles, strong and however graced. Slow movements, almost in slow motion, and this implies technique, sacrifice, training, devotion and above all awareness, full awareness of one’s own body, of the physiology and of the  human and divine nature of one’s own body.

Complete darkness. Pitch dark. Suddenly, six spheres of rigid and articulated plastic threads take life and movement on the stage. Six spheres as those that often the Chinese sell almost always in the Duomo square and gallery in Milan. Those spheres that make the happiness of so many children. That they expand and reduce in their syncopate movements of young beings that Have just taken awareness of their small hands.

Those spheres with phosphorescent threads stir in the dark creating strange geometries and figures. They are now lined up among themselves; they now jump the one above the other; they now draw unreal figures in their permanence in the retina of my surprised astonished eyes; perhaps they are men and women in black leotard to move them. I don't know. It could be also this way. But it is irrelevant who or what gives them such magic strength.

I don’t care if behind those movements there is a human being or a superhuman strength. Let’s say I want to convince me that their movement is dictated only by chance and by the energies of the public. Rather I want to convince myself that each one of the hundred spectators in that theatre can see his own shapes and only his owns. Hundreds of spectators that project their fantasies and imaginations and move those spheres; Hundreds of spectators that see their own personal shapes; the shapes projected by their own anxieties, anguishes, joys, imaginations, dreams.

I associate the name of woman to every sphere in its flowing in and flowing out, in its expansion and contraction. The name of those women that have walked beside me in my walk of man.

And in the representation I find it hard to follow the movements of those woman-spheres.

And I find it hard in their movements and overlaps to understand and single out again who is who among them.

And I find it hard in their movements and overlaps to concentrate on a woman-sphere because in the meantime another one takes over to the preceding one, takes her place,  her SCENE, and she is the one who becomes the only woman-sphere that magnetizes my attention. Because from small she expands and takes the scene. Because she is small and remains small but it circles above her fellows forcing the eye to follow her in that movement, necessarily skipping the other ones. Because small or big, she bounces rubbery above the others, climbs over and insinuates. Because she attracts, with a pleasant and mysterious strength, my eye to the others’ disadvantage.

It seems a competition, a sweet and sensual competition, without violence, without strength, without embezzlement, without jealousy, without desire to excel, without desire of woman-sphere-prima donna.

It seems a coordinated and fluid dance even in the apparently casual rebounds, even in the vaulting that is apparently without any logic of physics of the materials.

It seems to me all of this and at the same time its opposite.

I am spellbound, attracted, enthusiastic, abducted, imprisoned by those movements. I feel like I were on that stage. Or, better, I feel that a part of myself, the most energetic and immaterial par, is on the that stage and it stirs in symbiosis now with a woman-sphere, now with another.

And it is for this that I am convinced, I am absolutely, incoherently, madly convinced, that in the end, I and Only I succeed in seeing that the movements of those spheres unite in a preconstituted magic sequence.

I am absolutely convinced that each one of the hundred spectators has composed his own image visible only by himself. Hundreds and hundreds of absolutely individual and personal images.

And at the end I see two small woman-spheres that, moved by the first two breaths of wind, they draw near the floor of the stage to the distance of 60 centimetres one from the other.

On the contrary, another one, in her pregnant swelling, moved by a strong puff of wind, it is positioned above the other two and exactly to the centre of the them.

Other two woman-spheres struck by a gust of wind, circling at the mercy of that strength of nature, settle oblong above, respectively to the right and the left of the pregnant swelling.

And finally, another woman-sphere, in a slowly fast movement takes off continuously increasing, and decreasing diameter, and in that aerial movement, only apparently casual, dances and pirouettes bright; its flight in the air assumes spherical forms of different consistence and diameter; she almost seems to circle above the stage, above the proscenium, above the stalls; she is in continuous search of a spatial positioning, until, for imagination or for reality she settle to the centre and more aloft of the others.

And here it is, now visible, in an instant of fixity, in an instant of atmospheric quiet, in an instant of absolute peace, here it is that shape of man made of six woman-spheres, moved by six breaths of wind.

Once more magic has gotten its effects; once more imagination has produced concrete and tangible results. Once more from the imaginary and highly imaginative modelling of the energies a being is born, sum of all of this, with a proper aerial consistence; as immovable snowmen take life from the modelling of snow.

Equally,  the seventh of March 2003 a transmigration and a transposition of my conscience makes tangible the projection of my affective histories, in a continuous change in search of an ideal, in search of a composition of my being man, the components' fruit that the relationships conducted until today have left and sedimented and metabolized in me.

Here it is.

There.

Correct for an instant.

That figure of consistent man, ready to be remodelled once more in who knows what unstable and varying form.

Here it is, that figure, ready itself to take new forms in spontaneous and not compulsory adaptation, in that game of love where the individuality and the values have to be a guide in the composition of the new figure.

Here it is, that figure that…

Here it is, that figure that…

Here it is, that figure that… that there is no more because a new breath of wind upsets it and makes the sphere-women that had given life to the man shape made of woman-spheres roll once more...

Here they are, the spheres, again to roll following winds, gusts, breaths of wind, subsidence and asperity and inclinations and slopes of the ground.

Here they are, ready to autonomously undertake other and new trips in search of other sphere-women to join in order to reach the genesis of other figures of men. In a continuous and endless flowing in and flowing out.

And this reminds me of that other show of the Momix seen some years ago.

And while I am rereading these words cd player it plays a Stadio song:

"… Let’s go back in the wind and reopen our wings…"
Stadio - Sorprendimi

Too strange and continuous coincidences happen to me in this period. So many concomitances that recall moments of life. So many, endless coincidences and signals that make fluctuate between a thought and another, between a story and another, between a moment and the recalls to other moments.

Too much eccentric to be only banal coincidences and not symptoms of discontinuous continuity.

I talk about a movie and a SMS arrives, unexpected, publicizing that same movie; they describe me a non common car and I, that had never noticed one of it until then, see three of them and of the same identical colour, all in the same day; I describe a stretch of highway speaking of the memoirs tied to it, and I have to drive along it, by chance, a few days later but with the unforeseen event, just before finding myself on it, of a traffic block because of an accident. I go out of the highway, I cross tortuous mountain roads at the Passo of Cisa so similar to others I know, listening to "Concato" and in the very moment he sings "but doesn’t that down there seem the sea?" I begin to glimpse the Liguria sea and I feel the strange desire of a dessert that, stopping in a small country cafe, I find last in the desolate showcase, so similar to the desired one.

Coincidences, eccentric sequences or revealing signs as those of Benni’s sentence?

I don't know and I don't understand. But these things happen too frequently in the last periods. Last periods in which my life, for the umpteenth time, goes along a walk similar to that of so many other times. A walk of loneliness at the end of a love story. The umpteen love story in which I had invested so much part of myself, of my emotions, of my expectations, of my heart, of my rationality. The umpteen story I have decided to abdicate to find again my true essence and my true being, my values, the satisfaction of my needs, my hardness and intolerances, my incapability of mediation and acceptance.

And once more, in this walk of loneliness, here I am in search of myself, in the attempt of recovering the shed shreds along the walk, in search of ephemeral pleasures that give me gratification and that, somehow, calm all those wounds, induced and wanted, gift of these last ten years.

Will I ever find a true peace? Will I ever find a true affective stability? Will I ever find the strength to give up something of myself to have in change "stability" and family?

I am afraid I won’t. I fear that my life is channelled toward a continuous search of the best, I don't say my destiny because I have the conceitedness to think that I am the only one who gives a course to my existence. I am convinced that this spasmodic search of the best at all costs doesn't let me appreciate, or better be satisfied with the so many positive aspects that the women with which I have had love stories possessed in so many different ways.

I am afraid that I am the one who is not able to mediate between my needs of liberty and autonomy and the necessary interdependence that exists in a stable relationship.

I am convinced, unluckily or luckily, that this need to give continuous result to my prevaricated demands will lead me to the search of a relationship that can sublime my dualistic necessities.

I am convinced that I will continue to favour this fucked necessity to be a Man that pants to have a relationship of free continuity, of free necessity of constant relationships.

I am convinced that I will remain alone with myself in my incapability of mediation between needs and desires, between constraints and pleasures, between subjugation and independence, between masculine models that don't belong to me and my incapability to be other from me.

But I don't resign myself.
